Farside House, in Turtle Bay, is a five/six bedroom, 3/3.5 bathroom house set in beautiful tropical gardens that overlook English Harbour and the ocean beyond. The spectacular, architect designed pool sits next to a huge pool deck with large covered, shady area with dining table, sofa, BBQ and shower.
The house has free and fast broadband which is rare on the island. It has a charming, rustic quality throughout and is built to allow the cool sea breezes to flow through the house. There is no glass. Just shutters and nets on all the windows to keep the bugs out of the bedrooms.
The house boasts a large kitchen and open plan living space which opens onto a verandah and the wide open 'floating' steps to the architect designed pool, huge pool area and pool house. The kitchen has a dishwasher, two large fridge freezers and a five burner gas hob and large gas oven. There is also a BBQ in the pool area. The kitchen is a very good size and really well equipped for large groups.
There is a TV on the wall in the open plan living room/kitchen. There is Apple TV to watch but also cables so that you can connect your lap top to the TV and watch anything you want. There is high speed fiber optic broadband which is free allowing you to stream anything you wish from the internet. There is also a surround sound Bose sound system. Plug in your phone and play your own music to your heart's content.
The master bedroom suite sits on the main, ground floor. The bedroom itself is a large room with windows to the east and north allowing the breeze to cool you. All the windows are netted for insects allowing you to keep them wide open all the time. The bed in the master bedroom measures 7' x 7'. There is also a large dressing room with ample hanging space and shelves for two people, if not the entire family! There is also a separate toilet here with an amazing view across the valley to Proctor's Point. Also a basin and cabinet with shelving and drawers. The shower room is something else. Open to the sky and enormous, you can see the stars at night time or the bougainvillea during the day time. It is truly wonderful. There is also space here to hang your wet swimming gear.
Downstairs you will find three bedrooms. There are two doubles (one with a very large double bed) each with their own shower room. Between them is a twin room. Each of the downstairs bedrooms has doors to the garden. The whole of the downstairs is screened for insects so there is no need for mosquito nets. The windows can stay open all the time and in this way we catch the cool breeze.
The fifth and sixth bedrooms are located next to the master bedroom and have a double bed as well as two singles. These rooms have their own access to the open air shower room enjoyed by the master bedroom suite. Please note that these two rooms are connected and are only separated by a curtain.
The garden at Farside is magnificent. There is over an acre of flowering trees and shrubs with paths that meander through it. Standing on the verandah you are at tree top height and you look through the palms and foliage to the view beyond. It is really breathtaking. The pool, designed by our architect son, enjoys far reaching views to the harbour. The design is such that there are wide steps to enter it which are ideal for children to go in and out but also a long length which is ideal for fitness swimming. The far end with the view has an infinity edge. The pool house has a dining table that seats 10 and sun loungers and an outdoor sofa. It is really the place to unwind and relax with plenty of shade for the hot afternoons.
Under the master bedroom suite there is an 'outside' laundry area with large top loader washing machine and many washing lines to hang your clothes. Some of these are under cover and some are outside. Drying never takes long in this climate!
The house enjoys wonderful breezes for most of the year but in particular through the winter months. There are fans for when the breeze drops but we find that it is rare to need the fans except in the height of the summer. The house faces east which is the direction of the trade winds that blow regularly for most of the year and Turtle Bay is renowned for being one of the coolest places on the island. We think we are unusual in that we always keep a blanket on our bed during the winter months! This is unusual in Antigua but the house really keeps cool with the constant breeze.
The house is very private and is not overlooked by any neighbours although there are neighbours either side behind the tress and lush foliage. So you have the best of both worlds. The road to the house can get very pot holed as the season progresses. It is usually made up by the local community in November and drives well for the first few months but falls apart with the summer rains.
We now have a renovated cottage in the garden which is available to rent separately. Please enquire or see listing for Hermitage Cottage. It sleeps 2 in a self contained and private cottage which is a short walk from the main house.
